Essential Oils for Digestive Support
After years of struggling with asthma, bloating, inflammation, and the inability to maintain a consistent weight, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease in 2009. Even when I went gluten free, there were still many symptoms of Celiac Disease that I couldn’t get rid of like migraines, dermatitis, cramping, bloating, fatigue and mood swings. One week, I couldn’t even leave my bed because of severe head tension.
Months after going gluten free, I would still getting accidental exposure to gluten as I was learning the lifestyle because it's everywhere! Gluten is even in things like your toothpaste, some brands of gum, lipsticks and more. Who would have imagined that I would have to start reading labels of skin care and hair care products!
Anytime that I came in contact with gluten (yes, just by touching gluten), my skin broke out in water-filled bumps. They almost looked like pimples but were painful. Later I found out that this was dermatitis herpetiformis and common in people that have Celiac Disease.
Not only was it painful, but it was also raging a war against my self-confidence.
I wasn't able to hold eye contact because I feared I was being judged by the breakouts on my chin. I didn't speak up in meetings at work because I didn't want attention on me. I wasn't enjoying the single life of NYC because who would want to date someone with all of these skin issues!?
Occasionally I would still get stomach pains, cramps or bloating so badly that I would have to unbutton the top button on my pants.
Then there were the mood swings. Anytime I would come in contact with gluten, there would be violent mood swings from the shift in my body’s hormonal balance. One minute I would be on cloud nine, and the next I would be crying like I just re-watched the Titanic.
But, my biggest concern was fatigue. A friend of mine with Celiac Disease says it this way, “there’s being tired, and there’s being ‘Celiac tired’." Throughout the work day, I would be fighting the constant urge to crawl under my desk and take a nap. After lunch I couldn't keep my eyes open, be productive or even concentrate on my to-do list.
I knew that something had to change. It wasn't until going through this for five more years, that a friend introduced me to essential oils, and I haven’t gone a day since without using them.
Here’s what essential oils work for me and how you can try them:
Place a drop of stimulating oil like peppermint directly to your temples. Additionally you can place a drop in your hands, gently rub together and breathe in aromatically.
Skin irritations and blemishes: Place 2 – 3 drops of juniper berry or lavender essential oil into a dime size drop of unscented lotion in your hand. Mix together, and then rub over the irritated area. If you want to use the oils this way on your face, just try your face lotion instead of body lotion.
Digestive Support: Place 1-2 drops of ginger essential oil or a blend like DigestZen directly to your abdomen area to promote digestion, maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract, and help reduce bloating, gas, and occasional indigestion.
In this post, I talk more about essential oils for heartburn.
Feelings of balance: Place a drop of balancing oil like clary sage, lavender or rosemary essential oil in the palm of your hand, rub hands together and inhale the oil aromatically.
Mental alertness: Apply a combination of basil and lemongrass essential oils directly to your temples, back of neck and feet when feeling fatigued or low on energy. Additionally, you can diffuse lavender or roman chamomile essential oils at night to create a restful sleeping environment.
Essential oils have made a powerful change in my wellness, and they may do the same for you.
Keep in mind though, essential oil information is only as good as the essential oils that you’re using!
If you're ready to start using essential oils, I'd love to work with you. There are a lot of options out there now for essential oils, but they are not all created equal. To get the therapeutic benefits of essential oils, like we've talked about using essential oils for digestive support, then you need to get the purest grade of essential oils out there.
